Don O’Neill B.Arch, MRIAI, of O’Neill Consulting acted as Project Architect with Kernan Architects, Limerick,   on the 3.75 million renovations and additions project at St. Mary’s Secondary School, Nenagh, from 2005 to 2007. The project includes new technology and art facilities as well as a new Physical Education Hall.

Other consultants are Gordon Campbell Quantity Surveyors, Nenagh, Michael Punch & Partners Civil & Structural Engineers, Limerick, and Finbar Pigott & Partners Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Ennis. The general contractors is Tom Hayes Ltd., Killaloe.

The new Sports Hall has internal dimensions of 19 x 32 metres with a clear height of 7.2 metres. It can accommodate a range of indoor sport and athletic possibilities including tennis, basketball and multiple badminton courts. The 20 metre composite steel and laminated timber trusses were partly prefabricated and assembled on site by THL &   Mackey Engineering Contractors, Nenagh.

The car park in front of the existing school will be replaced by a landscaped park designed by Don O’Neill and the additional parking around the Sports Hall will double the parking available. The project was completed on time and within budget in Summer 2007.
